Der chemische Aufbau des Haares als Voraussetzung für die Umformung
Die chemische Haarsubstanz, das Keratin, setzt sich aus Aminosäuren zusammen. Es gibt rd. 20 verschiedene Aminosäuren, die sich zu Großmolekülen (Makromolekülen) zusammenlagern und die Gruppe der Eiweiß-Proteine bilden. Beim Haarkeratin ist ein Teil der Makromoleküle schraubenförmig aufgebaut. Mehr als 1000 Atome (Kohlenstoff-, Sauerstoff-, Stickstoff-, Wasserstoff- und Schwefelatome) lagern sich in schraubenförmigen Windungen übereinander an.
Keratin-Makromoleküle bilden eine sogenannte “Helix” (griech.-lat. “Spirale”). Neben diesen sehr regelmäßig angeordneten schraubenförmigen Makromolekülen ist vermutlich im Haarkeratin noch eine zweite Art vorhanden, bei denen die Makromoleküle in ungeordneter Form vorliegen -man spricht von “amorphen Zonen” im Keratin und ordnet diesen die Rolle einer Art “Kittsubstanz” zu (manchmal auch “Zement” genannt), die die Fasern der Faserschicht (des Cortex) und die Schuppenzellen der Schuppenschicht (Cuticula) fest zusammenkittet. Hier sind die Zusammenhänge wissenschaftlich noch nicht restlos geklärt, doch kommt, wie wir später zeigen werden, gerade dieser noch nicht völlig aufgeklärten “Kittsubstanz“, den amorphen Keratinbereichen, bei der Dauerwelle große Bedeutung zu.
Die Struktur (der chemische Aufbau) des Keratins ist zu einem Teil für die Elastizität des Haares mit verantwortlich. Man vermutet, daß bei einer Umformung eines Haares die Elastizität vorübergehend teilweise aufgehoben werden muß. Dadurch wird das Haar in Grenzen verformbar. Wir hatten bereits gesagt, daß eine solche Verformbarkeit schon durch das Wasser möglich ist.
